The digital landscape we navigate daily relies on a robust and evolving internet infrastructure. Recognizing the critical need for sustained technological advancements in this domain, the AIORI 1 initiative has emerged as a pivotal platform for fostering innovation and collaboration. This Winter 2024, AIORI 1 is spearheading a series of impactful events – workshops, a hackathon, and a symposium – all under the overarching theme of “Internet Standards, Measurement & Research Engagement.”
At its core, AIORI 1 aims to cultivate future leadership in internet technology by laying a strong foundation for more capable, reliable, and cost-effective internet solutions. The initiative addresses the crucial need to enhance the readiness of new internet use cases, mitigate technological risks arising from internet design, and ultimately improve the quality and penetration of the internet for everyone.
This ambitious vision is being realized through a multi-faceted approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders to participate in focused activities. The AIORI 1 umbrella encompasses:
- Workshops: Providing a platform for in-depth learning and knowledge sharing on key internet technologies and standards.
- Hackathon: An intensive and collaborative environment where participants can translate innovative ideas into tangible solutions, pushing the boundaries of current internet capabilities.
- Symposium: A forum for researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to engage in discussions, share findings, and chart the future direction of internet research and development.
The success of AIORI 1 is underpinned by a strong network of partners and supporters. Host institutions provide crucial local event management, accommodation for resource persons, and essential infrastructure like conference halls, food services, AV equipment, and internet-equipped labs. IEEE IC IAYP contribute strategic development, coordination, sponsor outreach, joint certification. Furthermore, the India Internet Foundation (IIFON) plays a vital role by providing the AIORI Internet Measurement Platform (IMN) for the hackathon, enabling practical experimentation and performance analysis and managing the Hackathon program.
A highlight of the AIORI 1 initiative was the participation in the IETF 122 Hackathon. This event provided a valuable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges. One notable project undertaken by a team during the hackathon focused on “Evaluating the Performance of Different DNS Server Software Implementations with PDM using AIORI IMN measurement platform.” Their work involved implementing RFC 8250 IPv6 Destination Option in the AIORI-IMN platform, analyzing the performance of various DNS servers, and developing tools for DNS measurement. The team’s efforts and findings were presented at the IETF meeting, showcasing the practical impact of the AIORI platform.
The AIORI portal (https://portal.aiori.in) serves as a central hub for information and resources related to these initiatives. Furthermore, the PDM implementation can be explored at https://v2.aior.in/PDM.
AIORI 1 stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and focused effort in driving internet innovation. By bringing together researchers, developers, and industry stakeholders through workshops, hackathons, and symposia, AIORI 1 is actively shaping the future of a more resilient, capable, and accessible internet for all. The Winter 2024 initiatives mark a significant step forward in this ongoing journey of technological advancement.
