Analyzing the Resilience and Performance Aspects of Root DNS Servers in India

There are 13 DNS root servers operated by 12 organizations called root server operators (RSOs) to help with domain names and IP address resolution across the globe, forming the critical Internet infrastructure. For stable, secure, and resilient operations, the RSOs use the anycast (Lindqvist and Abley, Operation of anycast services, 2006) deployment strategy to host multiple instances of the same DNS root servers across multiple locations with the same IP address and AS numbers announced from different networks. More deployment of root server anycast instances across networks makes it faster and helps in low latency, stable, and resilient resolution. The chapter is trying to study the deployment practices and analyze the performance aspects with the help of AIORI-IMN (Raje A et al., The internet measurement network (AIORI-IMN), 2023) Internet Measurement Platform to get an understanding of the current deployment scenario in India. We also analyze the measured data, the gaps, and way forward for better performance and stability of root DNS resolution.
