IEEE - IC

Standards Hackathon

Overview

A unique hackathon opportunity which enabled the participants to learn key nuances of Internet standards development process and its open source implementation in SDOs, like IETF. The hackathon brought both remote and physical hackathon experiences implementing global practices.

Phases

Remote Phase: 23 Teams | 69 Participants | 16 Universities | 6 weeks

Onsite Hackathon at IIT Guwahati: 9 Teams | 27 participants | 7 universities | 2 Days

Grand Finale at IIT Guwahati: 5 Finalist Teams | 2 winning teams

5 Real RFC-based Problems from RFCs 9606, 9411, 9461

Problem Statements:

  1. Designing a Tool for Querying DNS Resolver Information (RFC 9606)
  2. Automating Service Binding Discovery for Multi-Service Environments (RFC9461)
  3. Intrusion Detection/Prevention System (IDS/IPS) Throughput and LatencyBenchmarking (RFC 9411)
  4. Stateful vs. Stateless Filtering Performance Comparison (RFC 9411) 4.
  5. Measurement of Power Consumption in NSDs During High Load Traffic (RFC9411)

Winning Teams:

Red Relay

DNS Resolver Analysis (RFC 9606)

Problem Statement:
1 Designing a Tool for Querying DNSResolver Information, RFC 9606

Team members :

  • Debarghya Bhattacharyya
  • Aditya Ghosh
  • Dipankar Basu

Github repo:
https://github.com/indiainternetfoundation/redrelay

Implementation:
Developed a web-based tool to visualise RESINFO DNS Record and compare various DNS servers on their Answers, DNSSEC implementation, etc, all at once

SecureNet Innovators

IDS/IPS Benchmarking (RFC 9411)

Problem Statement:
3 Intrusion Detection/Prevention System (IDS/IPS)Throughput and LatencyBenchmarking, RFC 9411

Team members:

  • Nabhonil Bhattacharjee
  • Sampurna Pyne
  • Raja Karmakar

Github repo: https://github.com/indiainternetfoundation/securenet-innovators

Implementation:
Developed an end-to-end solution to reproducibly measure KPIs like latency, throughput, accuracy, etc while maintaining a controlled and contained environment, by producing pre-profiled network scenarios like regular traffic profile, attack traffic profile, high-load profile

Problem Areas Explored

  • DNS measurement tools
  • Performance benchmarking of IDS systems
  • Stateful vs stateless filtering comparisons
  • Power-aware NSD monitoring
